![]() ![]() Pillars of Eternity was a great revival for old-school CRPGs, but it was also critized for being dry and taking itself too seriously ![]() KOTOR II was a deeply philosophical take on the Star Wars universe, but was extremely buggy at launchĪlpha Protocol could've been a great spy RPG, but was likewise extremely buggy It feels like every single game they've released has been marred by issues of one sort or another, despite many of the games containing kernels of greatness within. They're also not afraid to incorporate 'hardcore' features into their games that challenge the player to think a little more deeply at the same time, they are not so doggedly wed to the past that they refuse to keep up with the times and innovate where necessary.Īll this being said, though, it can be somewhat frustrating to be a fan of Obsidian. They're often willing to go the extra mile and put some real thought into realistic worldbuilding for their games' settings, rather than just falling back on simplistic "videogame logic" to design their gameworlds. As a lifelong RPG fan going back to the early 90's (and especially of CRPGs, with all their wonderfully rich game mechanics and systems), I've always admired and connected with Obsidian's approach to making games I appreciate their design philosophies and willingness to trust in the player's intelligence. ![]() As you may know, they've been around for nearly 2 decades, having been formed from the collapse of Black Isle Studios in 2003. Although I haven't played all of their games, Obsidian Entertainment is a game developer that I've followed with interest throughout their long history. ![]()
